“There’s no need to fear, Underdog is here!”

Okay, this restaurant has nothing to do with marvelous cartoon series from the 1960s of the same name, but Underdog: The Organic Sausage Joint was certainly a highlight of my San Francisco dining experience.

Underdog produces just about the best sausages I’ve had, vegan or otherwise. Their vegan offerings include a classic veggie dog, veggie beer bratwurst, veggie kielbasa, and veggie Italian, all grilled and served on an organic white or wheat bun. (Note, they also serve meat sausages, so if you have a thing about your food sharing the same kitchen with dead animals, don’t go.) The night I went, I tried two of their special vegan dogs, an apple one and a spicy one. Both were simply terrific—perfectly seasoned, hearty, and wonderfully textured. And with completely reasonable prices under $4.

l_89d3a0a8bdd93d183fab030454fe9693The utter deliciousness of these sausages, the cool, low-key vibe of the takeout space, and the extremely Earth-friendly practices* make Underdog my new favorite hot dog stand in the entire world.

 * Says their website: ”Everything we sell is made with natural and organic ingredients. We will never sell anything that contains gmo’s, artificial preservatives, artificial sweeteners, artificial flavors, transfats, or high fructose corn syrup. We conduct business in ways that make the least negative impact on our planet by trying to always use packaging, supplies, and disposables made from either recycled paper and/or biodegradable products made from renewable and sustainable resources like corn, potatoes, bamboo, or sugar cane. We recycle as much as we can and encourage you to do the same. We try to always only use non-toxic and biodegradable cleaners. We donate a portion of our profits to local charities.”

** Sorry no pics of the hot dogs themselves. They were so delish I ate them before I could take a photo!
